School’s Out!

schools out blog

Most of us are now in the final week of this academic year! For many children this will signify endings – changing teachers, classes, key stages or even schools.  Some may need a bit of extra support managing these feelings.

  • Acknowledge the feelings and mark the change in some way – for example, bring in cupcakes for the class.
  • Recognise it can be a tricky time and help them process by reflecting back to them what they might be feeling – for example, I am wondering…
  • Build positivity and reflect on achievements – what can they do now that they couldn’t at the beginning of the school year.
  • Say hello as well as goodbye – what new beginnings are there to look forward to and prepare for?

Many children are excited about the 6 week summer break. But how do we help them remember the lessons they have learned with Heads Up Kids – emotional literacy, emotional regulation, collaboration and resilience?

  •  Why not try creating a holiday routine for them, to give them a bit of structure. Top and tailing your days with similar activities can create that security they need, and allow for freedom and flexibility of activities in the day.
  • Don’t try and cram too much in; the children – and you – need time to be quiet and relax.
  • Make a family plan so everyone knows what is happening on each day – and family rules, so everyone is clear about expectations and consequences.
  • And be prepared for meltdowns – they will happen! Be there in the moment with your child if they do, acknowledge their feelings, and give them space to be ready to join in again.
